Former Marine Zak Anderegg was on a hike deep inside a canyon in Northern Arizona by himself when his life changed forever. He saw a badly injured dog at the bottom of a 350-foot slot, in a place that he described as “so narrow that the sun barely reaches the bottom.”
He knew no matter what he needed to get the dog out of there and save him. The puppy was emaciated and incredibly weak, and it seemed that unless someone had put him deliberately there and abandoned him, it didn’t make sense to find him alone in the canyon without anyone around.
Anderegg quickly got him to a medical professional, and while things didn’t look good for a while, the young pup, over time, began to get better.
Anderegg decided to formally adopt the pup, and drove him back to his home in Utah from Arizona. He was taken in by Anderegg and his wife, and it was then that the newly named Riley started a new chapter of his life with his new family.
They gave him plenty of love, with a lot of toys, fantastic food, and all the help he needs whenever he needs it. Riley’s incredible story even caught the eye of several television shows, and he had the chance to be a guest on the Today Show, Inside Edition, and Ellen, where Ellen Degeneres provided him with a lifetime of Halo Dog Food!
The truly adorable Riley was graced with a true angel in his new owners for finding him in the most unpredictable of places and bringing him into their home. They also recently revisted the place where they met, to create some new memories together and cherish the traumatic, yet important moment together in Arizona. He’s been truly living life to the fullest since those days, and we can’t wait to see what he does next!
According to Anderegg’s blog, he is forever grateful for Riley:
“I will forever be grateful for having [Riley] in my life. He rescued me as much as I rescued him…”
