Nuns spend 3 hours daily learning Kung Fu and breaking bricks

May 11th, 2020

When you think of a nun, what first comes to mind? If you’re like a lot of people, it’s not physically strong women. You’re also probably not thinking of intense exercise. But some nuns certainly fall into this category.

Not all nuns are Catholic…a lot of them are Buddhists who live all over the world. Many of them live in Nepal or the surrounding region. And you may be surprised at what they do with themselves daily .

Nuns of the Buddhist Drukpa Order

The Buddhist Drupka Order is found in Nepal. It’s a type of Buddhism that’s thousands of years old. Many nuns live their lives at this temple.

They’re unique

The Drupka Order isn’t like any other location in the world. The women there who are nuns learn special skills they wouldn’t experience anywhere else. That makes this particular group special within the country and beyond.

They practice martial arts

You might think nuns just sit around in spiritual silence all day but that’s not the case with these women. Instead, they go outside every day to practice Kung Fu. They all participate in the practice, as it’s a part of the overall experience.

A special spot

The Drupka Order is the only one in Nepal that practices martial arts. So, this practice isn’t about Buddhism but rather an interpretation of the teachings.

They’re way stronger than you might think

Perhaps one of the most amazing things you’ll see these women do is break bricks…something they can do it with their bare hands. Sometimes, they can even break a whole stack of bricks at once. It’s extremely impressive and just goes to show how strong they are.

They train for three hours every day

These nuns aren’t the lazy type. They wake up at 3 a.m. to meditate before they train for hours. That’s a lot of time to work out. So, you can imagine they’re all in great shape.

Helping hands

These women aren’t just intimidating fighters, though. They also do their best to help their local communities and nation as a whole. For instance, they worked incredibly hard to take care of people after an earthquake hit Kathmandu back in 2015. Even though many aid organizations wouldn’t show up because it was too dangerous, these women were there making a difference.

Going further with activism

The nuns of the Drupka Order are also activists. They biked over 14,000 miles to protest human trafficking. And it was thanks to all their physical work that allowed them to do this with relative ease. You just try biking that far and you’ll see how much strength it requires.

Self-defense classes

The Order also knows how important it is for women to be strong so they can keep themselves safe. So, these nuns take self-defense classes along with other lessons. Since they have both the skills and ability to protect themselves, they teach others.

An inspiration

There’s no question that these women are inspirational. They work hard every day to train their bodies…so they can train their minds. Maybe it’ll inspire other people to get out there and try Kung Fu. After all, why not do something new?
