Chances are you’ve heard this song countless times before. It exploded in 2012 when it appeared in the movie “Pitch Perfect” when Anna Kendrick helped to rise it to popularity. Many people have put their cups to the test to see if they could mimic the actions that goes along with the lyrics.

Two girls, Cal & Ray, decided to take a stab at it like so many others. Of course, they did what everyone does these days. They recorded themselves and posted the video when they were done. Since they posted it in 2011, it’s received more than 22 million views. That’s a lot of cups.

It can be challenging to master this song solo. Have you ever tried to do it? After all, you need to coordinate all of your cups moving with the lyrics of the song. But to do it as a duo takes it to another level. These girls were certainly up to the challenge.

During the song, the cups are moving around and are hit on the counter in sync with the beat of the song. It really is a lesson in rhythm. But, Cal & Ray prove that they’ve got this.

These girls are not only on point with the cup tapping and clapping, but they’re also pitch perfect when it comes to their singing. They harmonize beautifully as they move the cups around to the song.

While everyone knows the song from “Pitch Perfect”, everyone may not know is that “Cups” is a version of a 1931 song “When I’m Gone” that was originally sung by the Carter Family. It was performed a cappella with a cup to give it a beat.

The first time the song was performed on YouTube was in 2009. Luisa Gerstein and Heloise Tunstall-Behrens did a version as Lulu and The Lampshades. It was done under the title “You’re Gonna Miss Me”.

Ever since then, there have been so many people doing their own takes of the song. It’s funny how one song can catch on so much. During this rendition, you can tell that Cal & Ray must have spent a lot of time practicing. The song itself has a quick beat with wordy lyrics that need to be sung fast. If you don’t, you’ll lose the song. The words could really tie up your tongue, but not for Cal & Ray.

They get through the song effortlessly and when they’re done, they slid their cups down the counter.

If the video has you inspired to give it a try, all you need is a couple of cups and some rhythm. We can’t promise it’s going to be easy, but it should be fun. In the end, you can see if you’re just as “pitch perfect” as the original.
