When 17-year-old male singer Amanuael Visser strutted onto the stage on The Voice Australia this year, no one knew what to expect.
He was rocking high heels, sparkling leather pants, and an awesome afro which made him look like a rock star straight out of the ’80s. However, as the audition was blind, the judges couldn’t see any of it. They had to judge him entirely by his voice.
The song he chose to perform was “Midnight Train To Georgia” by Gladys Knight.
As soon as he started to sing, everyone instantly knew the young singer was destined for great things.
Although, he did have to travel a long way beforehand on his journey to the spotlight.
Amanuael has a very interesting life story.
He was adopted when he was eight months old from Ethiopia and brought to Australia to live in a small country town a few hours north of Melbourne.
“I am very grateful for being able to come and live in Australia and have this amazing life,” said Amanuael.
However, he did mention that he felt like he was destined for bigger things. For Amanuael, he was betting everything on music being his ticket to success.
His dream was to escape small-town life by becoming an R&B Pop singer.
“He’s so confident in his own skin and he knows just where he wants to go and who he is. We realized now we’re raising Prince,” Amanuael’s parents said.
Within seconds of beginning his audition on The Voice, Amanuael’s dreams rapidly started to come true.
Boy George heard him sing and instantly slammed on his button.
Amanuael just has this crazy soulful quality to his voice that is absolutely incredible.
It’s so fun to watch him.
Shortly after, two other judges decided they wanted the talented young man on their team as well. In short succession, Guy Sebastian and Kelly Rowland both hit their buttons.
“I’m loving your hair honey! I’m loving your voice, loving the heels, to match…” Kelly began saying.
However, George interrupted.
“I mean you’re so cool. It always feels bad to fight over you but I’m going to fight over you,” said George. “Your look is just so ready to go and I would love to have you on my team.”
Guy couldn’t wait to get in on the fight for Amanuael either.
“I just feel like you’re the sort of person that makes people want to dance, people want to get up and just boogie,” commented Guy.
All three judges did their best to coax Amanuael onto their team and it’s pretty hilarious to watch.
Ultimately though, Amanuael went with his gut and decided to choose Team Kelly. She was so excited and danced her way onto the stage to give the soulful singer a big hug.
It was certainly an amazing performance. Amanuael is one of the coolest talents we’ve seen this year and it will be super exciting to see how he progresses as time goes on.
