Songs evoke emotion.
And the more harmony that a song carries, the more powerful it will be.
This is especially true when the harmony isn’t between a collection of instruments, but a collection of voices.
And there are few singing groups that are better harmonized than the BYU Vocal Point.
This acapella group from Brigham Young University is extremely fine-tuned and each one of their songs is expertly crafted.
When this group set out to learn the song “Homeward Bound” there was no doubt that what they’d produce would be nothing sort of extraordinary.
And to make their rendition of this beautiful song even more powerful, they decided to make a music video to go along with it.
The video begins with some landscape shots of the surrounding forest, while the voices from the acapella group come in.
Some of the voices are deep and smooth while others are higher-pitched and powerful.
They produce a perfect harmony that resonates with the listener in an extremely satisfying way.
The shots of scenery conclude and the video focuses on a solo singer, standing on a dirt road in the middle of the woods.
He is looking down at an old photograph of his loved ones.
The singer then folds the photo shut and begins to sing his solo.
You become immediately transfixed by his soothing voice.
The lyrics speak of a calm morning and a serene sunrise.
The camera spins slowly around the singer’s head as he sings, revealing the rest of the singing group behind him after it makes a full rotation.
The viewer is finally introduced to the origin of the voices that are making up the harmony.
The group begins to walk down the path together as they sing.
The camera fades in and out of various shots depicting the singers’ feet as they walk, as well as their faces, while they broadcast their voices to the surrounding trees.
Then a surprise group of singers joins in.
The video fades away from the older men and shows a new group of singers standing on a bridge.
But these singers aren’t what you may expect–they are children.
The young voices add a layer on top of the adults and a new solo singer takes a turn.
He is a young boy standing in the middle of the group of kids and his voice is every bit as pleasing as the older one.
Eventually, the young group of boys and the older group of men meet on the road and they all run to each other in a happy reunion.
The two groups’ voices combine to make a single, powerful harmony.
They sing through a couple more verses and then finish the song with a final chorus that is sung in a higher pitch than the previous ones.
Don’t be surprised if this final chorus gives you chills–it carries an emotional strength not previously heard in the song.
