10 times nature decided to be a complete nightmare factory
We cannot unsee these.

For every glorious mountain range and rainbow, there’s some stinging, deadly, tooth-filled, slime creature hanging out on the same planet.

Ok, so nature is far more beautiful than it is scary, it is good to remember that it’s not just here to impress us. In fact, sometimes it seems like it’s out to humble us. Or at least fuel our nightmares.

Check out these 10 photos – but maybe not right before you go to sleep:

1. What the…?!

This is a volcano “skylight” in Hawaii, which makes it sound a lot more scenic than it is. This particular place is called the “Portal to Hell,” for obvious reasons.

But we know what you’re really wondering – and no, those aren’t lava-fied bodies. The lava just formed some seriously creepy shapes.

2. Two nightmares in one!

Cymothoa exigua is a type of parasite that enters fish’s gills, eats their tongue, and then replaces it.

Did we really need to know that? Or even worse, see how it works with our own eyes? Just no.

3. The things we leave behind

For a moment, we thought we were looking at a grisly totem of a flesh-eating tribe hidden deep in the jungle. As it turned out, it was the husks of dead flowers.

Nature can really play tricks on you.

4. Eyes in the skies

We’re already not terribly fond of wasps, but did they really have to make the world’s creepiest nest, complete with vacant doll stare?

Imagine looking up and spotting this horror!

5. Snake segregator

Aren’t snakes bad enough without looking like spilled intestines?

Apparently not, says nature.

6. I wonder why it’s abandoned

Wow, hornets really know how to make things quaint, don’t they?

Maybe they moved out because they realized how terrifying this looks.

7. No day at the beach

It’s sad when sea creatures wash ashore at the end of their lives.

But sometimes it’s terrifying too because it makes us never go into the water again.

8. A(head) of the game

A sight like this could easily haunt you for weeks. On the other hand, we can interpret it as nature’s way of saying that everything can be put to good use when survival is at stake.

9. A face not even a mother could love

This creature is super frightening to behold.

It’s exactly how we’d imagine a flesh-eating worm that exists on the fringes of our worst nightmares.

10. Thanks, we hate it

This thing is straight out of Alien.

Can you imagine trying to teach your kids about the beauty of nature when this thing decides to emerge in its hideous glory?!

Nature can be glorious, but it’s not all rainbows and puppy dogs. It’s got its less cute and glamorous side too (don’t we all?).

We’re just glad we have yet to come across any of the above – even if we do expect to see them in our nightmares later.
