Metal containers are made for shipping purposes, not for people, right? A company named Casa Cubica definitely disagrees and transforms a single 160 square feet shipping container into a compact, yet beautiful and complete home.
The company from Costa Rica has built plenty of these houses already, and while they’re ideal for one person to live in or for couples, you can house as many as four people in one of these cubic homes.
The shipping containers are repurposed and given a second life, and the results are stunning.
The whole building consists of one shipping container, although Casa Cubica does use a small extension for some added facilities. Container homes are gaining in popularity nowadays because of their lower price tag, environmentally friendly design as well as the ability to move your home from one point to another.
Another important benefit for the people in Costa Rica is that these homes are more resistant to earthquakes.
When you step inside one of these shipping containers, you’ll be amazed at how much room there actually is.
The reason is simple: the company uses a lot of retractable furniture and cabins. The living room has a number of walls to store necessities and clothes and you have quick access to the surprisingly complete kitchenette.
There’s a Murphy-bed that folds into the wall when you’re not using it, and the container features a built-in bunk bed for guests as well. The Murphy bed instantly transforms the living area into a cozy and warm bedroom. And thanks to a retractable table, you can get the dinner ready in minutes.
In terms of natural light, the container features large windows on one side and plenty of smaller windows in the other areas to avoid the feeling of being boxed in.
The bathroom also gives access to the outside area.
Even though it’s amazing what you can do in such a smaller area, space is still somewhat limited. In other words, you won’t find a bathtub in here, but there’s plenty of room for a shower, a sink, and a washing machine. You can also quickly get outside via the bathroom.
There’s also a wonderful patio that connects to the nice rooftop terrace.
The roofed in patio layout is wonderful and gives the whole building a spacious feeling.
Take the stairs up to the great rooftop terrace – great if you want to relax for a bit, get some fresh air or enjoy the weather. The rooftop even fits a relatively large number of people, so it’s great for small parties as well!
Aside from its entertainment purposes, the rooftop also blocks direct sunlight from hitting the container – which would cause the container to get warm very quickly, especially in hotter climates. The metal has also been corrugated and features an air gap in order to make sure that there’s plenty of ventilation.
Aside from the practical benefits of this home, the ‘Casa Cubica’ is also quite safe. Its metal construction makes it quite sturdy, and you easily ‘lock’ the home with roll-down security shutters. The best part is that you don’t even see them when they’re not used.
It’s absolutely amazing that you can transform a simple and small container into a home.
