So what exactly are the origins of American Clogging?

Historically, the dance form is associated with bluegrass music, which has roots in the British Isles.

Clogging, itself, combines elements of German, English, Welsh, and Cherokee dance styles. African rhythms also play a huge role in the movement.

And from clogging, tap dance was eventually born.

But for now, we’re sticking to clogging.

And so are they!

Let me introduce you to the “Hillbilly Dirty Dance.”

Yes, you read that correctly. It’s named after Tommy Townsend’s song by the same name.

Some clog styles even have a “caller” who dictates the dance moves.

Listen carefully.

You can hear the caller in this performance. The cloggers react accordingly.

Even the YouTube comments sing their praises!

“The girl in the black shorts and top is the best I’ve ever seen. She just flows with the music and is in step all along the way. I’ll give her ten thumbs up if I only had eight more! Great job!”

Mom gives her daughter a shoutout in the same comment section.

Apparently, her daughter’s been dancing since 18!

“This video was from her second year at the National Clogging Convention with her friend Jacki. It was also the last year that she clogged. She spends more time with tap, contemporary, lyrical, and hip hop now a days. I can feel her soul speak when she dances. Thank you for watching!”
