Gymnastics showcases an athlete’s strength, coordination, balance, and endurance. Always a pleasure to watch, it is a competitive sport that involves apparatus such as vaults, uneven bars, balance beams, and even vaults, rings, parallel bars, and horizontal bars.
For the spectator, gymnastics provides entertainment like no other. Unlike most sports that have teams of five playing against each other, gymnastics takes on a slower pace and highlights each competitor’s flexibility and agility.
As enjoyable as it is to watch gymnasts in action, there is nothing quite like the magic of rhythmic gymnastics.
Rhythmic gymnastics is the seamless combination of gymnastics, dance, and calisthenics. In place of vaults and balance beams, you’ll see graceful gymnasts using hoops, balls, ribbons, and ropes in their routines.
It didn’t become an Olympic sport until 1984 but when it did, it became one of the most watched events around the globe.
At an international level, rhythmic gymnastics is a women-only sport. And if you want to see just how captivating it is, check out the incredible routines from the participating teams in the 31st Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships.
Watch how these ladies incorporate hoops, ribbons, balls, and ropes into each creative number.
Among the participating countries were Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, and Italy.
Held in Montpellier, France, the world championships held so much excitement and had the crowd cheering wildly. Some even kept large flags stretched out to show support for their country.
Teams from each country were more than prepared to put on a show for the crowd.
The sight of colorful, intricately designed leotards illustrates just how stylish a sport rhythmic gymnastics can be.
The stunning women from each team sported makeup that highlighted their features, and hair tightly pulled back.
Just like ballet, each gymnast kept their toes pointed, head held high, and arms and legs stretched out gracefully.
Each sharp movement accentuated just how delicate and lithe the gymnasts were.
Because gymnasts are judged on artistry, and execution and difficulty of skills, each team made sure they had all these aspects covered.
Competing in groups of five, the ladies demonstrated poetry in motion with their flexibility movements.
With unwavering elegance, the teams all had respective formations that served as appealing introductions to what they had prepared.
It was definitely a tight competition – there were no missed steps, objects dropped, or any sign of hesitation and confusion from the participating gymnasts.
The leaps, bounds, and pivots were nothing short of captivating, more so when combined with deft manipulation of the apparatus.
The ladies expertly tossed, rolled, and caught each object while they moved about.
If you’re not a fan of sports that involve jeers, running, kicking, and the like, and would much rather witness something that promises artistry, then this visually pleasing sport is just for you. More so if you have an appreciation for ballet – rhythmic gymnastics will definitely be right up your alley.
Entertaining and dazzling, these ladies not only knew how to keep the audience mesmerized, but they represented their countries beautifully with winning routines.
