You’re eating a beautiful piece of perfectly cooked fish that is delighting your taste buds and then it happens. You feel a fish bone caught in your throat. What started out as a pleasant meal quickly turns into an unpleasant and potentially painful situation.
So, what should you do when you get a fish bone stuck in your throat?
We’re going to tell you so that you can stay calm and remedy the situation rather than panic and go back to enjoying your meal.
Coughing is usually your first instinct and the best one. Coughing will help you to hack the bone back up by blowing air through your throat and dislodging it. You may have to cough hard for a few minutes to get the job done.
Sip Some Olive Oil
If coughing doesn’t work, you might want to slurp down some olive oil. It will act as a lubricant and help to slide the bone down your throat and into your stomach.
Drink Salt Water
Drink some lukewarm water with a pinch of salt, this should help dislodge the bone and help you swallow it.
Eat a Marshmellow
Chew a large-size marshmallow just enough so it’s sticky and small enough to swallow, then swallow it whole. The stickiness of the marshmallow should take hold of the fish bone so you can swallow it safely.
Swallow a Piece of Banana
Bite off a piece of banana and keep it in your mouth until it gets soggy. When it’s moist and soft enough to swallow whole, do so. This will have the same effect as the marshmallow method.
Eat a Piece of Bread Dipped in Warm Water
Pull off a piece of bread and dunk it in warm water or milk. Ball up the bread and swallow it whole. The fish bone should stick to the texture of the bread and bring it down your gullet.
Sip Some Vinegar
Dilute some vinegar with water and sip it down to try and dislodge the bone. Some say that this method can even help to dissolve the bone.
Seek Medical Attention
If you have trouble breathing or have an emergency situation call 911. If it’s not an emergency but you still can’t remove the fish bone, you should book an appointment with your doctor.
