What would you do if you discovered someone was sleeping in your bus without your permission? Most would have gone to the police and reported the culprit. Some would have chased the person away. Or worse.
That is human instinct. It would be a normal response as that’s how human’s respond to the unknown.
Not for this bus driver.
Meet Rick, the bus driver.
It starts off with Rick walking inside his bus, showing everyone how he goes through one last check of everything and how he makes sure it’s all locked especially the service and emergency doors.
He is doing all this with his cellphone in hand, including captions and descriptions of what he is doing and is very thorough.
Everything is double checked and locked.
Now Rick admits to not locking a door the previous night. And as he discovers, something was not right.
The last seat by the emergency door looked funny and he had a sneaking suspicion someone was staying in his bus.
So he hatches a simple plan to find out who the stowaway is by just leaving a sandwich and coke.
Rick lays the trap for the would be stowaway.
But to show the stranger that he had no bad intentions, Rick would leave a note. He introduces himself and explains his actions even going so far as to ask for the name of the stranger and if he was okay.
He reassures the sleeping stranger that he would not get in trouble. What a guy.
Reassuring a stranger is not something everyone is prepared to do.
Rick leaves the emergency door unlocked on purpose. He also leaves a pen with the note just in case the stranger decides to respond to his note.
He comes back the next morning, key in hand, ready to discover who his guest is.
The food is gone, the note is upside down and the seat belts in a different layout.
The man writes back to Rick. He is Tom and admits that he is homeless. He apologizes for coming on to the bus for shelter then says thank you for the food and drink. Rick really is thoughtful.
Tom is not a bum. He was once an accountant but lost everything after a divorce.
He is trying to make his way to New York in the hopes of getting back on his feet. He then asks for permission to stay a few nights until he raises the money he needs to move on to New York. Poor guy.
The food and drink wasn’t enough.
Rick writes another note and leaves it on the bus seat with some money.
He even asks Tom to accept this gift because he just wants to help him. He asks Tom to use it to get to New York as well as for some food and clothes.
The next morning, on the way to his bus, Rick hears his name being called. He turns to find Tom.
The two men have a nice long talk that included private matters. Rick focuses the camera on Tom as he had a few words he wanted to say.
Tom thanks Rick for everything he’s done. He wants everyone to know that Rick is a special human being and will be forever grateful to the man.
As the video ends, Rick goes on to show where Tom would sleep. A make shift bed behind shrubs and trees.
