Anniversaries for couples are worthy of a celebration because each year, you and your spouse have reached another milestone, just like Leonard and Shirley Matties who has recently celebrated their 72nd wedding anniversary.
91-year-old Leonard and Shirley Matties have been in love with each other for more than seven decades. It’s definitely not your usual day for these two lovebirds living facility in Burlington, Colorado.
When Ardis Behrendsen, a Certified Nurses Aide at Grace Manor Care Center found out that these couple will soon celebrate their anniversary, she knew she had to make it special!
She organized and planned an entire celebration to make sure that this year will be one memorable anniversary. She definitely knew how important it is to make sure that they get a memorable anniversary; after all, it’s not every day that we see couples celebrate 72 years of being together, right?
“I have been working in long term healthcare since I was 16. Working with the elderly has always been a huge passion to me,” Ardis Behrendsen wrote on her Facebook post.
Her sweet gesture was so touching and we can see just how close she was to her elderly friends.
“What I got to be a part of today was the most beautiful experience; this amazing couple has been married 72 years today. Not only was I able to get this beautiful bride a dress and doll her all up, but I was also able to take pictures of their very special day and capture the love and commitment they have for each other, even after 72 years.” Ardis continued in her post.
When Ardis saw the pink gown, she knew that it was perfect for the event and of course, for Shirley!
Carolyn Martell is one of couple’s children and she shared in her interview with CBS that her mother already has Dementia. She said that this was hard for her father to understand but this day was different for her parents.
This day, Shirley knew who she was and who the man in front of her was. She knew it was the love of her life!
In her shared video, Ardis wheeled in Shirley and she smiled, it was certain that she remembered Leonard! Her heart knew who it belonged to, it doesn’t matter if she forgets other things, her heart will never forget the man that she loves.
“I can’t even begin to tell you how it felt to witness so much love and emotion today, seeing the look on Leonard’s face when I brought Shirley out was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen,” Ardis shares on her post.
