Girl fills ChapStick tube with cheese for snack
I wonder what else you could put in a ChapStick container?

Can you imagine sitting in a classroom trying to focus on what your teacher is saying, and then all of a sudden your stomach starts growling? One 9-year-old St. Louis, Missouri, student has solved this problem with an extremely unique trick.

A fourth-grade girl put sharp cheddar cheese slices into an empty lip balm tube just in case she needed a quick snack. Here’s how it all went down.

A genius creation

The girl’s mother, Valerie Schremp Hahn, posted a photo of the “cheese balm” creation on Twitter, saying, “My 9-year-old daughter has taken an old lip balm tube and filled it with cheese so she can eat it in class.”

Hahn, who is a reporter at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, said she did not want to release her daughter’s name, but she felt her daughter’s creativity deserved some recognition.

The Twitterverse goes wild

Of course, responses to Hahn’s Twitter post were swift and full of praise. Most of the feedback was light-hearted and complimentary:

  • “Some stories give you hope for the future. This is one of those stories.”
  • “My sides and face hurt from laughing. I am also ashamed because I never thought of this.”
  • “Clearly this child has no need of further education.”
  • “Shouldn’t she fill one with summer sausage or a nice pepperoni?”

My favorite response on Twitter encompassed just two words: “Snack MacGyver.” Yes, I agree. MacGyver would be proud!

Inspiration strikes

Hahn’s daughter apparently isn’t taking all the credit for the idea. Apparently, she got the idea after seeing a similar idea on YouTube using a glue stick.

“I was just looking on YouTube because I was bored, and I found this video and I decided to do it,” she told BuzzFeed. “I just took some of my dad’s cheese, sliced it up, and put it in the ChapStick container. I just found that, cleaned it out with some soap, and started filling it with cheese.”

The video she had found on YouTube was actually of back-to-school pranks about how to sneak food into class. But she turned one of the recommended pranks into her own genius snack creation.

Her classmates loved it

After she cleaned out two tubes and filled them with cheese, she took what she deemed “cheese stick ChapSticks” to class for a quick snack. She said her friends thought the entire thing was extremely funny.

“At first I didn’t tell them and I was like licking the, quote, ‘cheese,’ and then I told them it was cheese and they just started laughing so hard,” the fourth-grader told Buzzfeed.

Apparently, the fourth grader’s teacher didn’t see the cheese tubes during class. But once she found out about them, she was quite amused, according to Hahn. The school’s principal also took notice and was so impressed with the fourth grader’s creativity that she was going to mention it in the school newsletter.

“I was kind of surprised it took off, but people like cheese so, you know, maybe I shouldn’t be surprised,” Hahn told BuzzFeed.

While different from Hahn’s daughter’s creation, food-flavored lip balm is actually a “thing.” And while it can’t be eaten — it’s purely for making your lips smoother — there’s some pretty cool lip balm flavors out there! Who knew there were lip balm flavors like French fries, pepperoni pizza, popcorn, chocolate milkshake, and hamburger.

Just talking about it is making me hungry. Do you think French fries will fit into my ChapStick tube?
