Life is filled with tough pills to swallow. These are lessons and ideas that on some level, we all know to be true but we would prefer not to think about. These are 50 of the toughest facts that any of us will have to accept.
You are not entitled to people’s time
You know the people in your life that haven’t checked in on you in awhile? They might be busy or going through something. Maybe try checking in on them.
Going to church doesn’t mean you are a good person
Going to church every Sunday, or even any Sunday, does not give you the moral high ground over others. You still have to actually be good to people.
Improvement requires effort
It would be nice if we were able to grow as people without putting in any effort whatsoever, but that is not the case. It requires discipline and sacrifice.
Your workout might not be as effective as you think
It’s good to really “feel it” after a workout but just because you are sore and puking doesn’t mean you had a good workout. It’s possible to work out the wrong way or to overdo it.
There are a lot of guns out there
None of us want to know what will happen if one group of people with guns come to take the weapons of another group of people with guns. I mean, it’s not altogether difficult to figure out what will happen… but still.
Poverty usually has nothing to do with hard work
A very tough societal pill to swallow is that for many people, working as hard as they can simply won’t be enough to lift them above the poverty line. There are systematic issues at play that they aren’t in control of.
You wouldn’t have paid attention in school no matter what
Even if school had taught useful things that you will actually need throughout your life, you probably wouldn’t have paid attention anyway.
Being nice doesn’t earn you a parade
We are supposed to be nice to each other. Stop expecting a parade and Nobel prize every time you hold the door open for someone.
Actions have consequences, my guy
Just because you feel attacked doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t do anything to bring it on. Perhaps, you are just receiving the proper consequences to your actions.
Some people at work are just putting up with you
People at your job have to see you every day. Just because they are nice to you, doesn’t mean they like you. Just wave hello, do your job, and then go home.
Your server works for tips
Your server is hoping for a nice tip from you. That’s the be-all and end-all of why they are being nice to you. Just be respectful and don’t let it go to your head.
You might not be as nice as you think
Similar to how most drivers think that they are better-than-average at driving, most people drastically overestimate just how nice of a person they actually are.
“Do as I say and not as I do” is pretty horrible advice
Your kids learn from your behavior more than they learn from what you say. If what you say and do are inconsistent with one another, they will eventually learn not to trust you.
Some of your problems are your fault
There are lots of circumstances that are beyond your control. There are also plenty of situations that are completely within your control and could be made better if you make active changes to your life and behavior.
People are nicer to attractive people
People treat attractive people with more respect and courtesy than people who they don’t find as attractive. This is not to say we shouldn’t all be mindful of our own behavior in this regard but only to say that attractive people have this advantage in life.
Embarrassment at your former self means you’ve grown
In some ways, this is a nice pill to swallow. You know how you cringe at some of your past behavior? It’s because you’ve learned and grown as a person and now know better. That’s a good thing!
Not everyone who is nice to you wants to date you
Some people are actually just nice. They aren’t being nice to you because they want to date you or because you are special.

You should have been working out during the pandemic
Many people have made the choice to scale back or even eliminate exercise during the pandemic. This is a choice you will eventually have to pay for.
Your tattoos don’t make you unique
Lots of people have tattoos. Unless you are doing something completely different with yours, they are not as interesting as you think and they say less about you than you might realize.
Sometimes your kid knows more than you, just deal with it, mom
It’ll happen to every parent at some point. Before your kid moves out, they will win a debate with you. It’s best to demonstrate to your kid how to properly concede a point and change your opinion based on new information. Or you could just ground them for being a smartass.
You can’t change people
It’s not possible to “change someone.” You can add to their experience and help them grow but that’s about it. The rest is on them.
People genuinely being nice to you is pretty rare
If someone you don’t know very well is being nice to you, there’s a good chance they want something. This isn’t the case all the time, but it is the case a lot of the time.
You aren’t interesting enough to microchip
Nobody is that interested in you. You aren’t that interesting. At most, they just want to see what kind of stuff you order from Amazon.
Driving sometimes takes longer and costs more
When you consider traffic, the time it takes to find parking, and the costs associated, biking or even walking is quite often the better way to go. It’s better exercise too.
Tough pill for pet owners
The heartbreak from losing a pet can be very intense and unfortunately, it is an unavoidable part of being an animal-lover and pet-owner.
Caffeine is a drug
Having to drink coffee every morning is a sign of drug addiction. This doesn’t mean you should stop or even care about this fact but it is what it is.
The food you think is healthy probably isn’t
Lots of unhealthy things don’t have any fat in them and lots of healthy things do have fat in them. It’s not as simple as fat = bad.
Healing crystals still look super awesome
We get it, you read an article that debunked many of the claims made by people who like healing crystals. They are still super awesome looking rocks so maybe chill out, alright?
Yes, you do have to wear a helmet
While it might be fun to bike really fast and feel the wind in your hair, you need to wear a helmet. If you crash and crack your skull open on the pavement someone else has to come and clean it up and that’s not fair to them.
You’ll never have it all figured out
If you are waiting until you’ve figured everything out to make a decision or move forward, you are literally going to be waiting forever.
Feeling protective doesn’t mean it’s your business
Sometimes we see something happen to someone that is unfair and we feel it’s our right to intervene. It’s not, though, and doing so can sometimes hinder the person from sticking up for themselves in a way they deem appropriate.
You’re not a hero simply for being in the military
Sorry buddy, but just being in the military doesn’t qualify you as a hero or even a good person. You might be, but simply being in the military is not proof of this.

You’re a snowflake
No matter who you are, you get upset, annoyed or offended at things. Sometimes, rather ironically, people get upset, annoyed or “triggered” at people who have been upset, annoyed or “triggered” at something else.

Even experts have more learning to do
Martial artists are sometimes surprised to learn that black belt isn’t really the last level. There’s always another level, and always something more to learn.
Nature does not care about us, nature does not care about you
Nature can be harsh and cold. It doesn’t care about what’s going on in your life, it’s going to do what it’s going to do regardless.
Robots already control our society
Everyone seems so afraid of A.I taking over our society that they aren’t paying attention to the fact that this happened years ago already.
People not having kids should not offend you
If someone decides that they don’t want to have children, that shouldn’t offend you. If it does, it says more about you than it does them.
Your triggers aren’t the responsibility of others
Not everything that upsets you needs to be removed from society. Sometimes it’s up to you to deal with how you react to things.
This one really depends on you
There’s a good chance that the reason you haven’t gotten that promotion you feel you deserve is not because your boss is a jerk, it’s because you don’t actually care that much about your job.
If you’re sad about the animals who died in bushfires, consider becoming vegetarian
If you are saddened by the stories of animals dying in the Australian bushfires, you should consider if your eating habits are causing the same amount of suffering and death, just saying.
You aren’t a perfect parent
Look, we’re sure you’re trying your best but even so, you are not a perfect parent. There’s chance your kid needs therapy. Just take them to the appointment and listen to a book on tape in the car. They will be fine.
You don’t look that good
We’re not sure who needs to hear this but you don’t look as good as you think. Your outfit isn’t that great, you aren’t that stylish, and you might want to take it down a notch.
You can’t take back what you said to your boss
Well, it happened. You got drunk at the holiday party and you told your boss what you think of them. There is no going back now.
If you think it might be a pyramid scheme, it’s a pyramid scheme
Did you get fooled by a multi-level marketing company? It’s a pyramid scheme and your friends will get real mad if you try and recruit them into it.
Be your own best friend
A very tough pill many people have to swallow is that their friends aren’t as loyal as they thought. You can be your own best friend, however.
Your brain lies to you all the time
It’s amazing we don’t talk about this much but your brain lies to you all the time. It lies to you to make you feel better about yourself but it still lies to you quite a bit.
Cheese will always be more famous than you
No matter who you are, no matter what you do or accomplish, you will never be more famous than cheese. Never.
Lord of the Rings didn’t play out like you think it did
Frodo was a failure and Sam was the real hero. Look, the ring isn’t an issue anymore, so let’s just celebrate that, okay?
Digital marketing is hard and you can’t do it yourself
Unless you’ve actually gotten a degree or studied it for an extended period of time, you are not a social media expert. If you just started a business, you’ll want to hire someone for that stuff.
Finally, a literal one
This one is a little bit more literal than the others. This type of pill is literally hard to swallow and also will literally leave a bad taste in your mouth. No analogies needed.
