Spring is now in full force, and summer is just around the corner. For many of us, that means days spent relaxing outside, enjoying the sunshine and eating delicious frozen desserts.
But the problem with ice cream is that it can be so fattening!
Sorbets are a perfect way of cooling down in the heat without adding inches to your waistline.
A sorbet has around half the calories as ice cream and is just as satisfying.
They’re also super easy to make!
With ice creams, you need to have an expensive ice cream machine. Who wants that in their kitchen?
But with sorbet, you only need a blender or food processor, which most people already have, and two ingredients: fruit and condensed milk.
You can experiment with different fruit to milk ratios, but generally, three cups of fruit and a quarter cup of condensed milk make a great sorbet.
Fresh fruit is great, but frozen fruit tends to work even better, as it makes the sorbet thicker.
And here’s a tip, if you want your sorbet to be super healthy, you can buy fat free condensed milk.
Just put the fruit and the milk in a blender and blend! It should be blended for around three to four minutes.
When the mixture looks creamy, put it in the freezer. Wait for four to six hours, and it’ll be good to go.
It might be that the sorbet is hard to scoop once you take it out of the freezer. If that happens, then just let it sit at room temperature for five minutes.
Of course, the really great thing about sorbets is that you can have all kinds of fun experimenting with flavors. Every fruit will blend into the milk, making the options limitless.
Obviously, some fruits are more suitable than others. Watermelons, in particular, don’t make the best sorbet ingredient, as they are very liquidy (unless that’s what you want in a sorbet. In that case, go ahead.)
There’s also the opportunity to mix ingredients and flavors together.
Strawberry and lime, bananas and lime, mango and passion fruit and chocolate and banana work really well.
And that’s before you even get to toppings.
A really simple way to make your sorbet look irresistible to almost anyone is to add some fresh fruit on top of the sorbet. It has the effect of making the people who eat it think that what they’re eating is just as fresh as the topping.
You can also put the zest of many fruits onto the top of the sorbets, giving them a special extra kick. And of course, chocolate flakes always look great.
But what if you’re lactose intolerant? You can still enjoy a good sorbet by making a lactose free condensed milk.
All you need to do is take some lactose free fresh milk, like coconut milk or almond milk, some sugar and heat them in a pan. Two cups of coconut milk and two thirds of a cup of white sugar do the trick. You have to mix it, bring the mix to a simmer and leave it to simmer for 30 to 40 minutes. You should NOT stir it during this time. Once it’s condensed, put the milk in a container to cool in. Once cooled, put it in an airtight container.
If you’re really creative, then you can even make your own labels and put it on tubs of your sorbet. And why not sell that product?
