We have only one complaint about avocados… their shelf life stinks.

Often you’ll find that your avocado is too hard to eat. It seems like there is only the shortest time span before it turns brown and goes bad. And don’t even think of putting the other half of an unused avocado in the refrigerator.

It will be brown and inedible when you take it out the next day, which is so annoying.

Here’s how to extend the shelf life of your avocados:

First off, you’ll want to select a proper avocado. You can find out how to pick the perfect avocado here. Now that you have the perfect avocado, you’ll want to make it last.

All you have to do is cut a red onion into large chunks and place the pieces into an airtight plastic container. Put your avocado half inside of it with the pit on top and the skin of the avocado touching the onion chunks. Place the lid on your container and put in in the refrigerator.

The sulfur gases that are emitted by the onion will help stop the oxidation process in the avocado which causes it to turn brown.

Now, you’ll actually be able to enjoy the entire avocado and not just half of it. Your taste buds can thank us later! You can use onions pieces after you’re done with your avocado.

The folks at Chowhound says this method works better than using lemon juice, tap water, and plastic wrap. Happy avocado eating!
