It’s been 10 years since Katie Piper suffered a horrific trauma at the hands of someone who claimed to love her. Being emotional, physically and sexually abused is something that could destroy the spirit of some.

However, Piper is living a beautiful life as a wife and mother who is helping others to overcome the trauma of being burned.

Piper, a TV presenter, and model had been dating David Lynch for two weeks when he physically and emotionally abused her in a hotel room before raping her in 2008.

Two days later he forced her to go to an internet cafe. He hired someone to throw sulphuric acid in her face when she arrived.

The attack left her severely burned and blind in her left eye.

According to The Sun, she spent two months in the hospital and had to have 40 operations. She also had to wear a plastic mask almost 24 hours a day at one point.

But Piper didn’t let any of that stop her.

About a year later, she started the Katie Piper Foundation which helps burn victims get services they need such as hair restoration, medical tattooing, makeup and camouflage, peer support and scar advice.

She’s also made an award-winning documentary about her life and became a featured guest on programs in the UK like “This Morning” and “Loose Women.” She presented the shows Bodyshockers and Never Seen a Doctor and launched her own show called Face to Face where she interviews others with skin conditions.

She’s also started a family.

Eight years after her attack in 2016, she married builder Richard Sutton who she had a daughter, named Belle, with.

“I feel so lucky to have met my husband, he’s a gift from God,” she told Mirror. “He’s an amazing person who changed my life for the better. He has given me our daughter and it’s one of the best things that has happened to me.”

Piper tells Mirror that her road to recovery wasn’t the easiest one.

“In those early days I created barriers in my head about not being able to get back to work or not feeling attractive,” she said. “When I was single and dating my now-husband, I thought ‘he’ll never fancy me. this is going to go wrong. He won’t like me. What’s the point in going?’ But then I thought, ‘What do I lose?’ My experiences have taught me that confidence and happiness are life choices. It’s not luck.”
