The Kondratyuk family suffered a tragic loss when Vadim, a 26-year-old man from California, caught a deadly infection. What started out as a tooth infection quickly turned into a fatal condition.

Vadim, who was working as a truck driver on his way to New York, took antibiotics prescribed by a doctor in Oklahoma before continuing on his route. By the time he reached New York the infection had spread throughout his body, filling his lungs with fluid.

“We prayed for him that day,” Vadim’s wife, Nataliya, told CBS News. “It was just not healing how it was supposed to. It was just getting worse.” Despite Vadim’s worsening condition, his family held on to hope.

When Vadim died shortly after, the Kondratyuk family showed even more strength in pulling together to make it through these difficult times.

They set up a Go Fund Me page to raise money for his funeral and the family’s expenses. They passionately described Vadim’s many roles in their family, including that he “was a very humble and calm person” who “would always put others before himself.” They were absolutely shocked by what happened next.

Much to the family’s surprise, the Go Fund Me page was extraordinarily successful. Strangers everywhere were eager to show their support for this loving father, husband, and brother.

The Kondratyuk family received over $250,000 in donations, proving just how generous humans can be.

Vadim’s wife and children are extremely grateful for the support they have received. They put out a statement thanking all their contributors for their “support during this difficult time,” adding that, “We have been blown away by the love and kindness we have been shown by our friends, family, community and even kind strangers.”

The compassion and encouragement this family received after persevering through such a devastating tragedy will renew your faith in humanity. We are so fortunate to live in a world where total strangers are willing to help in times of need.

Tooth infections are pretty common. Here are some facts about tooth infections, based on research collected by KCRA 3.

According to the California Dental Association, tooth infections can cause serious health complications.

Another study by the Journal of Endodontics discovered that between 2000 and 2008, about 61,000 people were hospitalized for tooth infections. About 1 in 1,000 of those patients died.

One dentist in Sacramento, Dr. Terry Jones, said that preventative treatment is very important, citing that nearly 100 million Americans do not visit a dentist every year.

According to KCRA 2, Jones said that tooth decay can cause tooth infections. He also explained that other medical problems like cancer or diabetes can make them worse. Jones recommends seeing a dentist immediately when you have a toothache and says that you should make sure to follow-up within 24-48 hours.
